Friends' Central School was founded in Philadelphia as a Quaker secondary school by a joint committee of three Hicksite monthly meetings. It was first located at 4th and Cherry Streets. In 1857, it was moved to 15th and Race Sts., and in 1925, it was moved to its present location in Overbrook, Pa. The current academic program includes grades K-12. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Abington Quarterly Meeting established a monthly meeting in the city for Friends of Philadelphia and Byberry. It became part of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1828. From 1828 to 1857, this meeting held its sessions at a meeting house on Cherry Street.
